Momo the cat saved his father’s life by swimming to safety
Momo the cat, who became famous after jumping from a submerged pickup truck and swimming for his life in floodwaters that hit southern Alberta, has been leading a quiet life. When disaster hit, Momo and his father were in their truck on a High River street that was only partially flooded. When the floods began, Momo’s father was at work, so he returned to his apartment to fetch Momo.
The water from the Highwood River soon flooded the vehicle as it hit a deep area in the road and swept through the area. Momo leaped out of his father’s arms and jumped into the sea, where he began to paw paddle to safety with his tiny wet head just peeking above the surface.
As a symbol of hope in the middle of the disastrous flooding, the event was captured on camera, and the pictures attracted attention from across the world. “I followed Momo while swimming, going everywhere she went. Just glad he went for the shore,” his father said.
In perspective, he believes that Momo might have actually saved his life because he was likely to have stayed with his truck. However, several people questioned the sanity of this brave cat dad returning to save his kitty.
“Some people asked me: ‘For a cat? Really?’ and I told them… he is a member of the family, so what can you do?” Momo’s dad says.
Grandma Momo did feel uncomfortable. I must admit that at first I was upset that my son had returned to get the cat, but overall I was incredibly proud of him since he made the right decisions for the right reasons. I love both my grandson and my son, and I can’t imagine life without either of them.
Momo didn’t appear to be harmed after his swim. His father said, “The next day he was fine and hopped in the shower — same old cat! Momo survived the Alberta flood, and after his pictures went viral, he earned internet attention.
